Ever since they were invented a century ago, man-made textile fibers have done more harm than good. In addition, synthetic fibers are just not very good at providing warmth, wicking moisture or breathing well. Sometimes the best way forward can be to return to the time-honored wisdom of the past. We are thrilled to be part of the movement to return to the more natural and renewable textile fiber of wool.

Use a Wool Friendly SoapWe recommend using a mild liquid soap or a wool specific detergent - no bleach or enzymes. Like all loom-woven blankets, it is normal for some minimal shedding and shrinkage to occur during the first few washes |
Use Cold WaterTo extend the life of your wool blanket, we recommend hand washing in cold water (a partially filled bathtub works great for this) |
Use a Delicate CycleYou may also machine wash your blanket separately in cold water using a gentle cycle - but do not use a washer with a center agitator. This blanket may also be dry cleaned if desired |
Air Dry Without HeatUse your washer's spin cycle to remove excess water - then line dry or lay flat to dry away from direct heat. Do not tumble dry using heat. Once the blanket is dry - use the no heat 'air fluff' dryer cycle to 'vacuum off' any loose blanket fibers |
Helpful Info
- Comfort Tips: We'd recommend keeping an additional layer of fabric between your skin and your wool blanket. For a chilly outdoor event - just wrap up and enjoy the coziness! For your sleeping bag - wrap the blanket around the outside of your bag for additional thermal insulation. For your bed at home - sandwich wool blankets between cotton sheets, other blankets and/or your bedspread
- No Need to Wash Before Use: While you can pre-wash your blanket if you'd like - your blanket was triple pre-washed at the factory and does not need to be washed before use
- Recommended Washing Frequency: Wool blankets generally don't need frequent washing - and will last longer by only doing so when it's clearly needed. To maintain freshness we recommend periodically airing your blanket outside. Minor soiling can be gently brushed off - or sponged off with a damp cloth
- Recommendations to Improve Wool Odor: First - please realize that wool itself certainly has a different smell to it than cotton or polyester - especially if it is wet or damp. If there are any lingering odors you'd like to eliminate - the best remedy we've found is to let the blanket air outside in the sun for a day or two (even in colder temperatures)
- Blanket Temperature Ratings: It's difficult to give temperature ranges that are actually useful because of the subjective nature of what constitutes 'warm' from one person to another. Given this we'd recommend thinking of your sleep system in terms of layers. Too cold? Add a layer. Too hot? Remove one. Given the weight of EKTOS blankets and the unique properties of wool, we believe you'll find them to be a valuable part of your layering strategy
- Use of Recycled Fibers: Our blankets contain a mix of both new and recycled wool fibers. The new virgin fibers provide more strength and protection against shedding - while using recycled wool allows us to offer blankets at more affordable prices (while also diverting many tons of useful material away from landfills). Also of note - because our 100% wool blankets are made from a blend of new and recycled wool fibers it's possible that they can contain very small (immaterial) amounts of man-made fibers
- 90% Wool vs. 100% Wool Blankets: Besides the obvious size, weight, and material composition differences - the biggest differentiating factor between our 90% and 100% wool blankets is the quality of the raw material inputs used to make them. Our 100% wool blanket product line uses higher quality fibers and a higher quantity of virgin wool
- Country of Manufacture: EKTOS Wool Blankets are Made in India

No it’s never going to be as soft as a cotton or flannel blanket or comforter, but it’s not the itchy, scratchy wool blanket of the past.
I’m slowly upgrading my bedding, and replacing the cheap big-box comforters and their mysterious unknown fillers and cheap polyester construction with natural, durable replacements, flannel bed sheets, flannel comforter, and wool blankets, moving the cheap big box store bedding to my 2010 Toyota Matrix I have set up for car camping.
“How does the Ektos blanket compare to an old fashioned wool blanket?” You may ask, and I actually have an answer for you…
Before I got this blanket, I found an inexpensive unused wool fire blanket (80% wool) on the local auction site run by Craig, and picked it up, the fire blanket is the typical old fashioned military style wool blanket, just natural gray, but there are noticeable differences…
Softness;
The Ektos blanket is noticeably softer than the fire blanket, the fire blanket is the traditional “scratchy and itchy wool” blanket used in scouting and the military the Ektos blanket is noticeably softer, if a flannel comforter has a softness of 10, the Ektos has a softness of 8, and the fire blanket a softness of 5.5
Warmth;
Honestly, it’s really close here, the fire blanket has a slight edge, being slightly thicker, but the difference is marginal, if you have no frame of reference or comparison, you won’t notice any difference, on a scale of 1-10, again, flannel comforter; 10, Ektos; 8.7, fire blanket; 9
Weight;
Ektos is bigger, so it’s heavier, but nothing uncomfortable, no point in comparing them here, the weight is nice on those cold winter evenings
Smell;
Both smell like a wool blanket, but thanks to the washing Ektos does, the Ektos smells like a freshly shampooed sheep, the fire blanket smells like a sheep.
Shedding;
Ahh yes, the biggest difference here, and the biggest drawback of the fire blanket, it sheds, a lot, not as bad as a Husky dog blowing it’s winter coat in the spring, but it does shed, and rather easily, the Ektos? I believe it’s *capable* of shedding, as it is a 100% wool blanket, but I haven’t seen mine shed. …at all. My cat sheds more than this blanket ;) he also adores this blanket just as much as I do
If you want a warm, soft, comfortable blanket that has a pleasant, mild, country farm smell to it, and will last far longer than the big box store junk, buy this blanket, you won’t regret it, as long as you keep in mind that wool blankets have their own unique traits and idiosyncrasies that cotton/poly/fleece/Sherpa blankets don’t.
No wool blanket is going to be as soft as flannel, that’s not how wool works, but you also won’t feel like you’ve wrapped yourself in a blanket made from
Sandpaper and itching powder either… and wool blankets last forever if properly cared for, unlike big box store bedding that has the insulation go flat after a few years and migrate to the outer edges, turning it into nothing more than a bedsheet with soft borders…
The Ektos blanket is highly recommended! 10/10
If you are not familiar with wool blankets, they do have a smell that's different than cotton - and they should; it's an animal product, and that is the wool wax which does all kinds of great things - it makes your blanket last longer, and keeps it reasonably soft among other things. It's not an awful smell - slightly musty. For those of us who grew up with Grandma's who had wool blankets, or who spent time in cabins it's a homey-familiar smell. If you really hate it, you can wash the daylights out of it with hot water and a strong detergent and you'll strip it out. Your wool items will be scratchier and felt up quicker, so I do not suggest that.
I did wash these when I got them - I went to the laundromat and used an industrial machine (because they are bigger than my machine!) I used half dose of mild detergent on the gentle cycle (warm water - laundromat didn't give me a choice) and then I put a tablespoon of no rinse eucalyptus wool wash with lanolin in it in the rinse cycle. You can buy quite a few off the latter on here. It's important not to use detergents with stain removing enzymes or "oxi-" in it when washing wool - those break down the protein in the fibers, (and I suspect that is why so many people here had major problems with shedding). Why did I put the no rinse wool wash in the rinse compartment? So that lanolin was deposited on it like a fabric softener. Makes it a good deal softer. Then I put it the dryer on low heat for about twenty minutes and it came out great. Did it shed some? Yeah, but not much at all. I've had sweaters shed as much. Did it shrink up some? To be honest, I didn't notice because I didn't measure it before hand. I think it looks the same.
Overall, I'm totally happy with this blanket! I consider it an investment because a well cared for wool blanket should last a lifetime. And this is a very solid middle weight winter layering option.
